Choosing the right monitor size
March 28, 2005 | I'm looking into buying a new LCD flat-panel monitor but am not sure about the sizes. I was under the impression that the size (for example, 17 inches) is different from the viewing size. Is this correct? My current CRT monitor is 17 inches, and I'd like roughly the same size.

| Your impression is partially correct. With CRTs, there's the nominal screen size (usually the advertised number), and then there's the viewing area. The viewing area on a CRT is usually about an inch smaller than the nominal screen size because of the bulky frame; that is, a 16-inch diagonal on your current CRT. With LCDs, on the other hand, the advertised size is the actually viewing size, so by getting a 17-inch LCD, you're already a step ahead of your CRT.
